"...And, as promised, “The Basque Musik Machine” took off on February 17th 2004 at “the Garage”, Highbury Corner, London.
Once again we had the privilege of having Fermin Muguruza to start it off. This time he introduced
us his new project along with his new band, Kontrabanda, the komunikazioa tour. From weeks
before the concert, the expectation started to build up, resulting in a full-house on the night of the
concert. Fermin, in top form, supported by a group of excellent musicians, kept the audience in near
hysteria, browsing through his new songs as well as many of his classics for almost three hours. We
had the chance to see loads of young Basque people who wanted to come and join Fermin and
Kontrabanda, and also were able to see people and friends from many other countries…Kurdish,
Latin American, many British, French and Spanish and so on…and even, again, the odd Japanese
student, with the mega-tiny video-photo camera…How do they do it?...Beats me… Total success. A
true multicultural festival, both in context and musically, due to Fermin’s versatility when it comes
to gathering his musical influences. A memorable evening indeed. Not surprising, since Fermin is a
true ambassador for Basque Music in the world, and has followers in every little corner of it. Come
back, anytime, mate… Eskerrik asko, Fermin eta lagunak, eta sorte on…"
Extract from Press release on Fermin Muguruza's Komunikazioa Tour:
..."After ending with Manu Chao and Radio Bemba Sound System the JAI ALAI KATUMBI EXPRESS project, Fermin Muguruza introduces his new tour: the KOMUNIKAZIOA TOUR, a summary of a whole life on the road, based on his last album In-Komunikazioa and on his last solo works FM99.00Dub Manifest and Brigadistak Sound System. Also including songs of his previous bands, Negu Gorriak and Kortatu.
With an outstanding formation of 12 musicians on stage, apart from Fermin Muguruza himself as lead vocalist, 3 women’s voices: BEGOÑA BANG MATU (former singer of Malarians and now with her own band La Orquesta Kingston), SORKUN (after Kashbad and the previous band of Fermin Muguruza DUB MANIFEST, she has released a new solo album) and EVA REINA (Hechos Contra el Decoro, Capitán Soul, Los Chunguitos) who apart from singing backing vocals, plays keyboards too.
There is also a wind section formed by JON ELIZALDE at the trombone, ARITZ LONBIDE at the trumpet and IGOR RUIZ at the saxophone. The scratch and DJ of the hip hop band Selecta Kolektiboa DZ, a trikitixa, diatonic accordion played by XABI SOLANO, the bassist ANDRES BELMONTE, the guitarist ALFONSO ARIAS (Hechos Contra el Decoro, the Jazz Quartet Carlos Marqués) and the drums of MIKEL ABREGO (BAP !!, Negu Gorriak, Dub Manifest, Anari, -gailu) make up the rest of the band.
The show lasts more than 2 hours and fuses together jazz, soul, reggae, ska, funk, hip hop, Basque rock and folk with the punk energy through the oldest language of Europe: Euskara (Basque language).
As Pablo Cabeza, who can now be considered his personal biographer, said: “Fermin Muguruza shows again that the public figure, the generator of opinions, is a musician with a great variety of music styles and in constant turmoil. He is an artist able to express all his possibilities and to cleverly channel them, always trying to contribute with something on stage.
Because of his past and his present, Fermin Muguruza is a reference point. It is not only because of his musical legacy and his lyrics but also because of his texts in magazines and newspapers, his collaborations in radio, his work as manager of the record label Esan Ozenki (providing a line, a brand and contents); as well as his solidarity trips, his contacts of brotherhood with Latin American people, his clear and categorical position about the reality of
Euskal Herria, the dozens of engagements in which he appears day by day and his freethinking words, which several politicians have censored.
In spite of it, however, fans and journalists alike have always shown admiration and respect for him, especially, for his talent, his work and his capacity to be coherent”.
The KOMUNIKAZIOA TOUR will also be an invitation to debate, to discuss, to communicate...in a world which is more and more dehumanized.
The ceremony of hugs is going to start..."
